MICHELIN

Founded in 1829 as a manufacturer of rubber balls, Michelin began its journey long before it became one of the world’s leading tire companies. It wasn’t until 1889 that the name Michelin et Cie was officially adopted. Just two years later, the company introduced its first detachable bicycle tire, a groundbreaking innovation that revolutionized manufacturing and repair efficiency.
In 1898, Bibendum, one of the most iconic mascots in history, was born. Michelin quickly expanded its influence beyond the road, becoming a key figure in tourism and gastronomy. In fact, it launched the now-famous Michelin Guide and its star rating system in 1926.
In 1946, the company introduced Michelin X, the world’s first radial tire. The X line went on to achieve major success, including a win at Le Mans in 1951 and the Formula 1 World Championship in 1979. Michelin’s contributions to the tire industry are as vast as they are visionary, particularly in terms of environmental leadership.
In 1992, it launched its first eco-designed tire made in part with silica: Michelin Energy. This marked the beginning of a more sustainable approach to tire development. From 1998 to 2014, Michelin hosted the Bibendum Challenge, a global event promoting sustainable mobility. In 2017, this mission evolved into “Movin’On by Michelin”, a collaborative initiative for sustainable transportation.
In 2019, the company also unveiled its brand-new airless tire featuring puncture-proof technology, the Uptis. Michelin’s
environmental awareness goes beyond production, as the company has been involved in advancing hydrogen-powered road transport for about 20 years. More recently, they have partnered with the Mission H24 initiative to introduce hydrogen on automobile racing circuits.
Thus, Michelin is no stranger to launching programs to demonstrate the seriousness of its intentions. Proof of this lies in the latest objectives of its “All sustainable” campaign, which targets large-scale design of tires with no impact on biodiversity and resources, produced in CO₂-emission-free factories, all by 2050. This would be a major milestone for the tire industry.
As a driver of change, Michelin has been ranked among the 100 most innovative companies in the world. Beyond environmental goals, the company is also involved in programs aimed at improving road safety and preventing traffic accidents.
In short, yes, Michelin is a versatile and innovative company, but it is also an activist enterprise that takes the well-being of the community into account.
