Honda develops in-motion wireless charging for electric vehicles

Several companies are currently researching ways to adapt wireless charging technology for electric vehicles, including while they're moving. Ford, for example, participated in a wireless charging pilot project in Detroit's Michigan Central district, where a section of roadway equipped with this technology has been operational since 2023. Now, according to Automotive News, Japanese automaker Honda has announced that it's also exploring wireless charging for electric vehicles in motion.

To this end, Honda R&D Co., Ltd., the automaker's research and development subsidiary, has partnered with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation. Together, the three companies have already developed the underlying technology for a magnetic-coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) road system, which would allow electric vehicles to recharge while driving. Demonstration testing on public roads could begin in Japan's 2027 fiscal year, which starts in April.

The technology would combine high-power-density transmitting and receiving units developed by Honda and compatible with direct current (DC) power distribution, a highly responsive DC power supply system developed by Taisei, and Taisei Rotec's technology for embedding equipment into road surfaces.

According to Honda, this combination would make installation on existing roads easier and enable wireless power transfer to a wide range of electric vehicles. The automaker plans to evaluate power transfer at levels of up to 150 kW while also assessing the system's reliability when vehicles are travelling at high speeds.
