Uber invests $300 million in Lucid to power its robotaxi fleet

On Thursday, Uber announced a major six-year agreement to deploy more than 20,000 robotaxis, responding to growing demand for autonomous vehicles. This strategic partnership involves Lucid, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, and Nuro, a startup specializing in autonomous driving technology. Under this agreement, Uber will invest $300 million in Lucid, while Nuro will develop the Level 4 self-driving technology that Lucid vehicles will integrate into Uber’s fleet. Nuro will also receive a multi-hundred-million-dollar investment.
The announcement boosted Lucid’s stock price by 36%, while Uber’s remained steady. The companies plan to launch the first robotaxis next year in a major U.S. city.
Marc Winterhoff, Lucid’s interim CEO, described this partnership as an opportunity for Lucid to enter an entirely new market. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing that it will allow more people to experience the benefits of autonomous vehicles. Initial testing is currently underway on a closed course in Las Vegas.
Finally, Nuro sees this partnership as a commercially viable and globally scalable blueprint for robotaxi programs.
