GM had already announced the arrival of new engines for its full-size pickup trucks, but until now, no power figures had been released. On September 16, 2026, as the automaker marked its 118th anniversary, GM took the opportunity to reveal the numbers. All four engines will be offered in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, each paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
The main highlight remains the sixth-generation Small Block V8, the new 5.7-litre L76, which will produce 402 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. The 6.6-litre L78, meanwhile, will deliver 481 hp and 501 lb-ft of torque. GM says the latter is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in its segment.
These V8s will be joined by an upgraded 2.7-litre TurboMax four-cylinder engine, now producing 350 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque — more than the 5.7-litre V8 — as well as the returning 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six turbodiesel, which now delivers 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. With an optional 129-litre fuel tank, GM estimates that the diesel can exceed 1,450 kilometres of highway driving range in two-wheel-drive configuration.
This translates into a towing capacity of up to 13,700 pounds for a properly equipped Silverado 1500 with the 5.7-litre V8. The Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,500 pounds with the same engine. However, the more powerful 6.6-litre V8 is limited to 9,700 pounds in the Silverado and 9,400 pounds in the Sierra.
