German automaker BMW is going through a challenging period with several largescale recalls affecting both combustion and electric models.
At the end of September 2025, the NHTSA and BMW of North America announced the recall of more than 196,000 vehicles in the United States. The issue stems from a starter relay prone to corrosion, which could cause a short circuit and, in some cases, fire risk. Authorities recommend that affected owners park their cars outdoors until repairs are made (Reuters, NHTSA). BMW confirmed that the repair will be carried out free of charge for all impacted vehicles (BMW.com).
Electric models are also affected. Nearly 71,000 BMW i4, iX, and i7 have been recalled due to a software defect in the high-voltage system that could lead to sudden power loss (The Drive). An additional 78,000 i-Series vehicles were recalled for a separate high-voltage module failure (CarComplaints).
These recalls follow a 2024 campaign involving 720,796 vehicles linked to an electric water pump defect (Reuters).
