NOKIAN TYRES

NOKIAN TYRES

Founded in 1898 as a Finnish rubber factory, it wasn’t until nearly a century later, in 1988, that Nokian Tyres Plc. was officially established. Renowned for its reliable and high-performing winter tires, the company showcased its forward-thinking spirit as early as 1934 with the invention of the Kelirengas, or "Weather Tire, the world’s first winter tire. This breakthrough paved the way for many successes, including the iconic Hakkapeliitta, which still travels our roads 89 years later. Now established in multiple countries, including the United States and Romania, this industry giant continues to aim higher.

The Oreda plant in Romania is the world’s first tire manufacturing facility to operate with zero CO2 emissions. Following its opening in 2024, commercial production is expected to begin in 2025. As a leader in environmental innovation, Nokian has set ambitious sustainability goals. Since 2022, its tires have been manufactured in zero-landfill facilities, and by 2030, 50% of the materials used in its products will be recycled.

With decades of expertise, Nokian stands out for having had no major recalls in the past 23 years. The company is also deeply committed to the product life cycle, recycling nearly 100% of the tires it sells in Finland and about 79% in the United States. Durability and safety are core values in its design philosophy. In keeping with these principles, Nokian has once again pushed boundaries by developing a tire reinforced with aramid, a material known in military and law enforcement for its bullet-stopping capabilities, now adapted to withstand potholes. The aramid composition increases resistance to impacts and external stress on the tire. As highlighted in one of the brand’s promotional videos: “Aramid saves tires, Nokian Tyres saves lives.”

Building on this innovation, Nokian introduced a tire replacement program for tires rendered irreparable by impact.* This initiative reflects the company’s consumer-first approach, not only prioritizing safety but also offering economic benefits. For example, Nokian incorporates silica, a compound widely known in the industry, to reduce rolling resistance and increase tire longevity. The result: reduced fuel consumption by up to 0.5L per 100 km.

From its innovations to its commitment to the environment, Nokian clearly stands out as a tire manufacturer that blends technology with safety.
