From its winter testing center in Ivalo, Finland, winter tire specialist Nokian unveiled to the world a brand-new tire featuring retractable stud technology for passenger vehicles, the Hakkapeliitta 01.
The studs on this tire remain hidden within the winter-tread pattern until a plastic membrane — a unique Nokian invention — pushes them outward from the tread after detecting a particularly cold surface.
Unlike the prototype presented by the Finnish company more than ten years ago, the Hakkapeliitta 01 operates strictly on a mechanical principle and requires no electronic intervention.
The tire is expected to be available at the beginning of the summer in preparation for the fall season, and will be offered in 124 sizes.
