GM’s 2.0-Liter Four-Cylinder Engine Affected by Debris

If one of your customers complains that their GM vehicle’s 2.0-liter LSY four-cylinder engine is producing an annoying ticking noise, be aware that the manufacturer has reportedly identified the cause.

Initially, technicians believed the engine had a tendency to overheat before concluding that a faulty sensor might be to blame. However, they have recently discovered that the issue is actually caused by debris becoming lodged in the hydraulic lifters, thereby preventing proper oil circulation.

This is outlined in GM service bulletin PIP6101A, which applies to engines used in the Cadillac CT4, CT5, XT4, XT5, and XT6.

A similar issue had previously been identified in the 2.5-liter LK0 and 2.7-liter L3B engines. The repair involves removing the camshafts and inspecting the condition of the lifters.

It should be noted that GM has not issued an official recall, but repairs — which may take up to approximately fifteen hours — will be carried out under warranty.
