Marc
First Class Mechanic

Can you tell us about your learning path?

I completed my vocational diploma (DEP) in mechanics at EMMEM and then worked in various types of garages.

What role has continuing education played in your career?

I’ve always taken the training offered by my employers, including some at CPA Montréal. In a garage, you might think you’ll just learn on the job, but that’s not always the case—especially with electric vehicles. That’s why continuing education is so important to stay current and competent.

What motivated you to obtain your First Class?

The sense of accomplishment and the salary. I’m really happy that there’s more recognition in terms of pay, and it also opens doors to other jobs in the field.

What’s your vision for the future of the automotive industry?

I want to keep working as a mechanic—I really enjoy this trade. I also think technicians will become much more recognized as vehicles get more and more complex.

Sean
First Class Painter

Can you tell us about your learning path?

I studied in Verdun. I first worked in mechanics, then body repair, and now I’m a painter.

What do you enjoy about being an automotive painter?

It’s always changing—there’s always a different job, and it lets me use my creative side. I found mechanics too repetitive.

What motivated you to obtain your First Class?

I quickly obtained my Second Class, so I thought: “Why not aim higher?” It was a personal challenge I set for myself.

What’s your vision for the future of the automotive industry?

Everything is changing so fast in our industry, it’s hard to say. I think we’ll still need painters and body repairers—even for flying cars. I work at Ford, and we’re constantly getting new equipment for aluminum, welding, and more—there’s always something new.
