According to a Reuters News report, Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to build two electric sport utility vehicles at its Georgetown, Kentucky, plant. This move would also mark the end of a Lexus model line.
The vehicles, expected to be based on the RAV4 and Land Cruiser, would be assembled in Georgetown, according to an anonymous source, while Toyota has so far declined to confirm the information. The same source indicated that the next-generation Lexus ES, due next year, would instead be produced in Japan and exported to the United States.
Nothing has leaked about the reasons for these changes, which could well be tied to import tariffs. The Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported last week that Toyota plans to consolidate Lexus production at a single site, in response to the higher tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
