British automaker JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) plans to partner with global giant Stellantis to develop a new version of the Defender for the North American market, where this specific model enjoys strong popularity, unlike in China, where internal combustion vehicles are losing ground to electric vehicles.
To do so, JLR believes it could share certain Stellantis plants in the United States to produce a new Defender, with the possibility of offering hybrid configurations. The North American market accounts for about 30% of JLR's global sales, compared with 6.7% in China.
What's more, according to JLR's analysis, 44% of U.S. demand is for vehicles priced above US$50,000, while the segment for vehicles priced above US$80,000 represents about 1.3 million sales per year worldwide, across all brands. The Defender intended for the U.S. market would be a vehicle designed specifically for that market.
