It was during the last week of April that the remarkable Beijing Auto Show took place in China's capital. While auto shows elsewhere in the world, such as Detroit, Los Angeles, and Toronto, only get a few lines in the newspapers, the Beijing show managed to attract considerable crowds. You might say that's only natural given China's huge population, but with more than 1,500 vehicles on display, it is still impressive.
Unfortunately, most of the vehicles presented there will never be exported to North America. But with new government policies, you never know whether a few of them might eventually come steal the spotlight here. Still, some European and American automakers with an established presence in this major Asian market had a few surprises in store for local visitors.
For example, Stellantis used the show to demonstrate the styling direction it believes Peugeot could take with the Peugeot 6 and 8 concepts. (Photo: Stellantis)
No auto show in China would be possible without the presence of giant Chinese automaker BYD. Its Denza electric concept stood proudly at the Beijing show, awaiting future production in both convertible and coupe form. (Photo: BYD)
One of BYD's more extravagant creations was the stunning SuperCar coupe nicknamed the Fangchengbao Formula X, a 1,000-horsepower electric car with a carbon-fibre body that is already ready for production. (Photo: BYD)
Believe it or not, the Fangchengbao Formula will also be available as an S sedan and as a wagon, still powered by electric motors producing a combined 1,000 horsepower. Those Chinese really are wild! (Photo: BYD)
Leapmotor is associated with Stellantis, and this B05 Ultra model, also known as the Lafa, is expected to arrive on the European market soon. It is powered by a 241-horsepower rear electric motor and should offer a range of 550 km. (Photo: Stellantis)
As for the Lynk Time to Shine, it is worth noting that the model is linked to Geely, which owns brands such as Volvo, Lynk, and even Lotus. (Photo: Lynk & Co) (Photo: Lynk & Co)
While Lincoln no longer builds its attractive cars in North America, Ford's luxury brand continues to offer its MKZ sedan in China, or simply the Z, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. (Photo: MotorTrend / Mike Floyd)
Positioned as a kind of Chinese Range Rover, the large Xpeng GX SUV was recently unveiled to the Chinese public. Details remain somewhat secret, but we do know it will be either a fully electric vehicle or one with range-extender technology. It is intended for autonomous driving. It should also be noted that the vehicle is assembled by Austrian manufacturer Magna-Steyr. (Photo: Xpeng)
The futuristic Xiaomi Vision GT coupe first appeared as a fantasy vehicle for a video game, but it is now known that it will be produced with electric motors delivering nearly 2,000 horsepower. (Photo: Xiaomi)
Do not expect to see this electric Bronco Sport coming to North America. But in China, if a manufacturer wants to remain competitive, it has to go in that direction. (Photo: Ford)
Here is another impressive vehicle that unfortunately will not come to North America. The Mazda EZ-20 will be produced in partnership with local automaker Changan. (Photo: Mazda)
Another vehicle of American origin that will not be sold here is the Buick Electra E7 plug-in hybrid, which will be reserved for the Chinese market and offer nearly 1,600 km of combined range. (Photo: GM China)
Do not be mistaken, this Audi E5 will not come out of China. In fact, this German-origin car will exist only in that Asian country. Built by Volkswagen's Chinese subsidiary, it offers powertrains producing up to 787 horsepower. (Photo: VW Shanghai)
The Zeekr 009 minivan is a high-performance all-electric vehicle from Geely, available in a seven-passenger version or as a four-passenger Grand version. With a range of 822 km, this unusual vehicle can reach 100 km/h in under 4.5 seconds. (Photo: Geely)
German automaker BMW also took advantage of the Beijing Auto Show to unveil its new full-size 7 Series sedan. At the same time, visitors were able to see the new i3 Neue Klasse. (Photo: BMW)
For its part, Nissan used the same show to unveil its upcoming Terrano SUV. And what if the Terrano name became Xterra again on our market? (Photo: Nissan)
Finally, Dongfeng's large Voyah Taisha X8 SUV, a five-passenger model positioned at an affordable price, will be available with a 657-horsepower electric powertrain or as a plug-in hybrid. Dongfeng does sell some of its vehicles outside China, but the chances of this one reaching our shores remain rather slim. (Photo: Dongfeng)
