In an industry in constant flux, the Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA) is shifting into high gear and preparing to launch a new training program in damage estimation — a key tool to help evolve and strengthen the skills of automotive damage estimation professionals.

Boosting Skills Development

The automotive industry is no exception when it comes to training challenges: today’s vehicles have little in common with those of the past, and the cars of tomorrow promise even greater complexity. To keep up, every technician needs to sharpen their skills.

Aware of these challenges, the GAA aims to boost the development of estimation professionals by enhancing its training offerings. In recent years, in addition to regular sessions, one-off estimation trainings have been offered and were met with great enthusiasm. Building on this success, a new full-time trainer position has been created within the estimation team.

The Estimator: A Central Role

Just like painters, body repair technicians, finishers, or parts clerks in the industry, the GAA wants to offer estimators the same opportunities for skill development. Their role is central to the auto repair process: they identify the extent of the damage — including that caused by the incident — determine the correct repair methodology, and provide an accurate and detailed report.

"True conductors of the repair process, estimators ensure the consistency and quality of interventions on the vehicle. Being up to date on new technologies and vehicle advancements is now an absolute necessity."

Artificial intelligence is also present in the industry and is already able to assess certain minor damages. However, when it comes to complex cases, human expertise remains irreplaceable.

Training Programs Tailored to Estimation Need

Led by the new trainer, these training sessions will be tailored to the specific needs and realities of the estimator’s job, with the support of GAA inspectors who will provide valuable field feedback from audited files. The sessions will cover a range of topics, including new technologies, materials such as steel, estimation rules, and much more, with varying levels of advancement.

These new offerings will complement the annual training programs already in place to meet qualification requirements for damage estimation of automobiles and heavy vehicles/equipment (regular and intermediate training).

The GAA's goal is to foster strong estimation skills in automotive damage and thus contribute to the evolution of the entire industry, helping to meet the many challenges that lie ahead.
