Hope on wheels: Hyundai Canada donates $1m to CHU Sainte-Justine

As an automobile journalist, one is often invited to car manufacturers' launches of new models, but it is rare to be invited to charity events. This time, Hyundai Canada invited select media members to the Science Centre in Montreal’s Old Port to mark a one-million-dollar donation to pediatric oncology research, made through their non-profit foundation “Hope on Wheels.”
CHU Sainte-Justine will benefit from this donation to advance research in the field. Hyundai Canada’s $1 million contribution will help fund essential research and provide vital support to patient care and survivor programs.
This contribution to CHU Sainte-Justine is part of a total commitment of over $4 million in 2025, aimed at supporting pediatric oncology centers nationwide. It marks only the beginning of Hyundai’s ongoing annual “Hope on Wheels” commitment to funding childhood cancer research in Canada.
Young Samuel, a pediatric oncology ambassador patient at CHU Sainte-Justine, gave a moving and heartfelt testimony about his experience with the disease.
[Translation] « We are incredibly grateful to Hyundai Canada for their generous support and commitment to children with cancer and their families, » said Delphine Brodeur, President and CEO of the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation. [Translation] « Long-term investment in pediatric research is essential to improving care, and the launch of Hyundai’s “Hope on Wheels” in Canada marks a major step forward in funding research at the national level. We deeply appreciate Hyundai’s dedication, which will lead to major breakthroughs at the Charles-Bruneau Cancer Centre at CHU Sainte-Justine, as well as the vital impact that Hyundai’s “Hope on Wheels” will have on the lives of children in Quebec facing a cancer diagnosis. »
In addition to Ms. Brodeur, Hyundai’s ambassador in Quebec, Marilou, was also in attendance. In an interview, she emphasized [Translation] « the importance of the philanthropic aspect tied to her involvement with Hyundai. » Steve Flamand, recently appointed President and CEO of Hyundai Canada, along with Mathieu Leclair, President of Chomedey Hyundai, were proud to participate in this noble cause.
The event brought together representatives from Hyundai Canada, the CHU Sainte-Justine
Foundation, and ambassador patients from CHU Sainte-Justine for the handprint ceremony, a unique tradition of Hyundai’s “Hope on Wheels.” This symbolic gesture, performed at every “Hope on Wheels” event, invites children and families affected by cancer, as well as donors, researchers, and their supporters, to leave their painted handprints on a Hyundai vehicle, creating a powerful symbol of hope in the shared fight against pediatric cancer and the search for a cure.
