Vehicle technology is evolving rapidly — and with it, a critical discussion has emerged around who controls the essential data needed for maintenance and repairs. At the heart of this issue is the Right to Repair movement: an initiative designed to ensure that automotive maintenance and repair professionals have fair access to the data generated by modern vehicles.
The latest instalment in AIA Canada's Consumer Behaviour series, titled Who Has the Right to Repair? Vehicle Owners’ Perspectives on Data Access and Ownership, explores Canadian drivers’ understanding of their vehicle data, who controls it, and how that knowledge impacts their maintenance decisions.
The data speaks for itself: when properly informed, Canadian drivers are unwilling to give up their rights. For example, 87 percent believe they should be able to have their vehicle serviced wherever they choose, and 82 percent believe manufacturers should be legally required to share vehicle data with all maintenance and repair providers.
Before learning more about the issue, most drivers had never really considered vehicle data or assumed it belonged to them. In reality, the situation is often less favourable to consumers. Nearly half of drivers said they would be more proactive with maintenance if they had a better understanding of the data their vehicle generates.
Consumers expect manufacturers and governments to provide clear and accessible information. This has led to growing calls for leadership and accountability from both private and public sectors.
When it comes to the right to repair, information changes everything. Once they understand how data control can limit their choices, vehicle owners become strong advocates for change. They demand fairness and transparency, and are ready to push back against systems that restrict their rights.
For businesses, the message is clear: consumers are demanding more transparency around vehicle data. Companies that support the right to repair and educate their customers about their options will earn their trust and loyalty.
