It may not be the most expensive car ever sold at auction, but this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta still found a buyer for the impressive sum of US$38.1 million at a Mecum auction held in Kissimmee, Florida, last weekend. This transaction far surpasses that of a Mercedes-Benz W196R, sold for US$29.7 million in 2013 at a Bonhams auction. Its main distinguishing feature? It’s white, painted in Bianco Speciale.
However, even taking the add-ons into account, this transaction didn’t surpass that of a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which sold for US$52 million at a private auction held last October. The previous year, a 1967 Ferrari 275 NART Spyder had, for its part, set a temporary record by being hammered down at US$27.5 million.
The first owner of the Ferrari featured this week was Fabrizio Violati, whose family was involved in agriculture as well as the bottling and distribution of mineral water, according to Bonhams.
