Mercedes-Benz may return to V8 engines

According to reliable sources from Europe, German automaker Mercedes-Benz is reportedly considering ending production of its 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid four-cylinder engine (combined with an electric motor), currently used in its C63 and GLC63 models. This engine would be replaced either by the brand's inline-six or by a new V8 featuring a flat-plane crankshaft similar to the one of the GT Black Series.

Amongst the reasons cited for this decision, British magazine Autocar reports the high cost required to mechanically adapt the four-cylinder engine to meet new Euro 7 emissions standards. Mercedes-Benz will work closely with its AMG division to develop this new V8 engine.
