Volvo believes in its AI-powered seatbelts

Swedish automaker Volvo (under Chinese group Geely) will soon market a new electric SUV, the EX60. Beyond all its aesthetic and technological innovations, one feature makes its engineers particularly proud: a multi-adaptive seatbelt system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and real-time data to better protect vehicle occupants in the event of an accident.

Volvo believes this technology will be as important to automotive safety as the three-point seatbelt it invented in 1959, which is said to have saved millions of lives. This new system was developed and patented with German supplier ZF Friedrichshafen using numerous sensors that will analyze the event as it occurs. Each seatbelt will assess the passenger, their weight, stature, and even whether the passenger is pregnant!
