Despite a certain lack of enthusiasm for electric vehicles, some new entries in this segment manage to stand out. Such is the case with the new Cadillac Optiq, a compact SUV built on the architecture of the ever-popular Chevrolet Equinox (thankfully, far from the badge-engineering days when Cadillac created the Cimarron out of a Cavalier!). Inside, the design is more refined, with an upscale look and higher-quality finish.
Power comes from two electric motors delivering a combined 300 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, giving this SUV standard all-wheel drive. Although it tips the scales at more than 5,200 pounds, the Optiq can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in under seven seconds and offers a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds.
On the road, it’s pleasant to drive and impressively quiet. Range is around 500 kilometers, though recharging can be lengthy—taking over 90 minutes to go from about 160 km to a full 500 km. The base Sport 1 model is priced at approximately $66,000.
