A new segment is rapidly gaining importance in the automotive market—particularly in the United States: rugged, true off-road vehicles. And it appears that German automakers want their share of this growing category.

For now, this segment is dominated by Jeep with its Wrangler, Ford with its Bronco, Land Rover with its Defender, Ineos with its Grenadier, GM with its GMC Hummer, and Mercedes-Benz with its G-Wagen. However, according to industry publication Automotive News, BMW, Audi and VW’s new Scout division are considering producing their own versions of an off-road SUV—something none of these manufacturers currently offer. Some models, such as those planned by Scout, would be electric, which could also appeal to the Chinese market. This will definitely be a story to watch.
