The return of the V10 in Formula 1?

According to a report by Reuters, Formula 1 could abandon the currently mandatory hybrid V6 engine in favor of a naturally aspirated V10, which would be… louder! This new regulation would mark the end of the turbo-hybrid configuration in favor of a simpler naturally aspirated intake system. The last time naturally aspirated V10 engines were used in Formula 1 was back in 2006.

According to Reuters, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA, is seriously considering this possibility. Since 2014, F1 cars have been powered by 1.6-liter turbo-hybrid engines, a costly technology to develop. However, as Formula 1 serves as a testing ground for new technologies, these V10 engines would run on fuel derived from renewable sources.

This return to the V10 could also reduce development costs for newcomers such as Ford and Cadillac, which plan to enter the sport as early as 2026.
