According to the specialized publication Automotive News, Moment Energy, a company based in Surrey, near Vancouver, is reportedly preparing to open one of the largest automotive battery repurposing plants by the end of June.
Founded in 2019 to refurbish electric vehicle batteries for stationary use, the manufacturer plans to increase the plant's capacity to one gigawatt-hour by 2030, which should create about 100 jobs.
The reconditioned batteries could then be used in data centres or by customers in the power generation and industrial sectors to help meet additional demand.
Moment Energy is already working with automakers such as Mercedes-Benz to give retired batteries a second life, while also trying to keep them in North America.
