Hyundai Mobis, the parts division of South Korean Hyundai Motor Group, unveiled a new technology capable of extinguishing a potential fire inside a battery cell.

The system can extinguish a fire in less than five minutes from its point of ignition, before it even reaches adjacent cells and triggers a chain reaction. Hyundai believes this technology will prevent thermal runaway thanks to heat-resistant materials. Sensors continuously monitor the battery’s temperature and voltage in real time and can instruct the software where and when the extinguisher should activate. The thermal runaway is one of the primary risks of lithium-ion batteries, which can lead to deadly fires and explosions. Several countries around the world, including China, already mandated safety measures to prevent such events.

Hyundai Mobis already filed domestic and international patent applications for this new system.
