Motor Trend Unveils Its Vehicles of the Year

Several organizations and publications announce what they consider to be their Vehicle or Vehicles of the Year on an annual basis. However, the prestigious American magazine Motor Trend has been doing so since 1949, making it most likely the longest-running annual automotive award program in the industry. This history explains the significance attached to its selections, which have become multiple over time as the market has evolved and segmented.

This year, Motor Trend selected the Volkswagen GTI and its R variant as Car of the Year for the third time. In keeping with today’s market segmentation, the magazine also named an SUV of the Year. For 2026, the honour went to the large, all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ.

It is worth noting that during Motor Trend’s very first Car of the Year competition in 1949, the winning vehicle was also a Cadillac, whose modernized V8 engine had captured the attention of journalists at the time. Finally, in the pickup truck category, the Motor Trend team selected the Ford Maverick—a choice that comes as no surprise to many observers.
