All signs suggest that Honda Motor Co. could build the next-generation Acura MDX and two new flagship SUVs at a new U.S. assembly plant, according to reports from the respected industry publication Automotive News.
The Japanese automaker is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to build a hybrid vehicle assembly plant in the United States, with a potential investment of up to $2.5 billion. Once again, Ohio appears to be the leading candidate, according to a September 24 report by the Japanese publication Nikkei. The proposed facility, which would be Honda's fifth assembly plant in the United States and eighth in North America, would mark the company's first new assembly site on the continent in approximately two decades.
According to inside sources, the plant would have an annual production capacity of approximately 250,000 vehicles and would be located in central Ohio, near Honda's existing assembly plants in Marysville and East Liberty, as well as its established supplier network. The new facility would increase Honda's overall North American production capacity by approximately 10%, bringing it to around 2 million vehicles annually.
