The HEMI V8 is really back

The return of Chrysler’s 5.7-litre HEMI V8 was rumoured many times. But this time, it’s official: the legendary engine will once again be available as an option in the Ram 1500, in the Tradesman, Big Horn, Express, Warlock, Laramie, Rebel, Limited, and Longhorn trims. Ironically, the return of the V8 will be marked by new badging on the Ram, a “form of protest,” according to Tim Kuniskis, head of the Ram brand, who returned after his “retirement.”

The HEMI V8 was phased out in favour of the new 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six Hurricane engine, which is more powerful and better suited to meet government emissions regulations. “That was a mistake,” Kuniskis said. Nonetheless, he acknowledges the strengths of the Hurricane, which will remain in Ram’s options catalogue!
