GM invests in a new V8

As incredible as it may seem, while most automakers are aiming to develop smaller engines with reduced displacement and fewer cylinders, American giant General Motors just invested some US$888 million in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant near Buffalo, New York. Why? To produce an all-new V8 engine. In fact, Tonawanda will be the second plant assigned to this task, after the one in Michigan.

This will be GM’s largest investment in an engine plant, requiring new machinery and tooling. The new V8 will be intended for several pickup trucks and SUVs and quite possibly the Corvette. It is expected to be more fuel-efficient and less polluting thanks to new thermal combustion technology.
