We don't usually cover race cars here, but this time, the little detour is well worth it. At the recent Fall Classic held at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, a Canadian racing team running several Radical cars was displaying another type of competition vehicle marketed under the Revolution Race Cars brand.
In Canada, Radical spec racing is attracting more and more competitors, including well-known personalities such as our local hero Alex Tagliani, recognized for his achievements in IndyCar and, more recently, NASCAR Canada. A Radical is essentially an open-cockpit sports racer powered by a rear-mounted motorcycle engine producing between 190 and 230 horsepower, depending on the version. Weighing approximately 620 kilograms, it's certainly a serious racing machine, and several Canadian teams have entered competitions in the series.
Along similar lines, this British manufacturer inspired other designers to create a comparable but more powerful type of race car, this time powered by a mid-mounted Ford V6 engine. That's how the Revolution sports racer, also designed in Britain, came into being. Today, Revolution reports having approximately 50 cars competing on racetracks, primarily in Europe. However, the brand is beginning to establish an interesting reputation in North America, including Canada. Ontario-based racing specialist Rilli Racing had one on display at Tremblant, a car driven by Canadian racer James Dennison.
Dennison's example was a 500 EVO, a two-seater featuring a monocoque chassis with a carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer safety cell. Its bodywork is also made from carbon-fibre-reinforced composite materials. The mid-mounted engine is a 3.5-litre Ford Cyclone V6 with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), related to engines found in vehicles such as the Ford Edge, Lincoln MKZ and Ford Transit. It's paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox manufactured by 3MO. The entire double-wishbone suspension system was developed by Revolution.
Naturally, pricing wasn't discussed during our visit (I believe each vehicle must be assembled according to the team's specifications). However, interested customers can contact Rilli Racing in Toronto to learn more.
Believe it or not, this Revolution race car (427 or 500) features a monocoque chassis with a carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer safety cell!
Recognize this engine? Surprisingly enough, the Revolution is powered by a 3.5-litre Ford Cyclone DOHC V6 producing approximately 500 horsepower!
To compete at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, the Revolution race car had to be equipped with a specially designed exhaust silencing system to comply with the 92-decibel noise limit imposed on vehicles using the track.
