Not so long ago, the death of the V8 was being announced. Yet, it is making a strong comeback, as Stellantis has just confirmed that the 2026 edition of its mid-size Dodge Durango SUV will come equipped with a V8 as standard. This makes the Durango the only three-row mid-size SUV to offer a base HEMI V8, while its rivals will settle for four-cylinder engines, even if turbocharged.
The Durango GT will come with a 5.7-litre HEMI V8 producing 360 horsepower as standard, while the R/T version will feature the 6.4-litre V8 rated at 475 horsepower. The highly specialized SRT Hellcat will return in the Hellcat Jailbreak trim, powered by the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 delivering 710 horsepower. It is worth noting that Ram 1500 pickups will continue to offer the HEMI V8, while the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon will still come with the 6.4-litre V8. A major novelty for 2026: this same engine will now be available in the Gladiator.
