Sulfur-crystal batteries under study

les-batteries-au-soufre-crystal-a-l-etude

A German start-up operating under the name Theion is currently exploring the possibility of commercializing a new generation of batteries for electric cars that would be less expensive, more energy-dense, and less problematic for the environment than current lithium-ion batteries. These are sulfur-crystal batteries... but the company's technicians still have a long way to go.

In a press release issued last week, Theion announced it had completed a first Series A funding round of approximately 15 million euros to develop this technology. It is based on a proprietary anode architecture that should help extend battery life — one of the main challenges of sulfur-based chemical processes.

Theion claims it can reach this goal without using nickel or cobalt, while sulfur is the 16th most abundant element on Earth. To be commercially viable, these batteries will need to withstand more than 1,000 charge and discharge cycles, whereas initial tests currently stop at 500 cycles.
