After facing its share of challenges recently, including an unsuccessful attempt to join forces with Honda, Japanese automaker Nissan, now led by new president Yvan Espinosa, has decided to move forward with its Nissan Vision plan.
As part of this decision, the brand is expected to reduce its global lineup from 56 models to just 45. However, several powertrain options will still be offered across a number of those vehicles. Nissan has also announced that artificial intelligence will be integrated into its semi-autonomous driving systems and voice assistance features. Reaching these decisions, however, was not easy. The automaker had to undergo significant restructuring and impose strict cost controls.
To begin with, Nissan has decided to divide its production strategy into four major categories. The first, "Heartbeat," will include performance-oriented vehicles designed to surprise consumers, including the new Xterra SUV. The second, "Core," will focus on profitable vehicles for the company, including the new Rogue hybrid. The third, "Growth," will target markets showing strong expansion potential. Finally, the fourth, "Partner," remains somewhat undefined, but is aimed at development in specialized regions.
