According to the specialized weekly publication Automotive News Canada, at least three Chinese automakers are currently organizing their entry into the Canadian market, while about fifteen others could eventually follow.
Indeed, BYD, Chery, and Geely are already working on obtaining certifications, establishing dealer networks, and securing financial partnerships in order to sell their vehicles in Canada, possibly by the end of 2026. This initiative is notably supported by the Canadian government’s openness to allowing up to 49,000 electric vehicles built in China into the country.
Naturally, Chinese automakers are looking for Canadian dealership groups to establish their sales and service networks. However, none of them are ready to ship vehicles to the country just yet, as several more months of negotiations will be required before actual commercialization can take place, despite the goodwill shown by Canadian federal authorities.
In addition to BYD, Chery, and Geely, other manufacturers already have a certain head start in this area, including Volvo (with Polestar and Zeekr), Tesla, as well as GM with Buick and Ford with the Lincoln Nautilus. Great Wall and about fifteen other automakers could also eventually attempt to enter the Canadian market.
A story worth following closely!
