Japanese automaker Honda has announced that starting in 2027, it will produce its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell system independently, without the support of its longtime partner, General Motors. This announcement was made at the International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo, held in Tokyo in mid-February.

The new system developed by Honda is expected to offer double the durability and triple the volumetric power density compared to the current system, which was designed in collaboration with GM and produced in the United States. These improvements would allow for a more compact design, making the system more versatile for various applications

For now, the prototype unit delivers 150 kW of power, compared to 78 kW for the previously developed system with GM at the GM-Honda plant in Brownstown Township, Michigan.
