According to Tim Reuss, President and CEO of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), as many as four Chinese automakers are expected to have models certified for Canada by early next year. In fact, BYD, Chery and Geely have each launched Canadian websites in recent weeks, after stepping up recruitment for their Canadian corporate teams over the summer. Dongfeng is also targeting the Canadian market and announced in July that it was working to certify at least two models for Canada.
The new import quota will allow 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles into Canada during its first year, with the allocation increasing by 6.5% annually thereafter. Approximately one-third of the quota had already been used. Tesla accounts for the majority of imports so far, while Polestar and Lotus have also secured allocations. Lincoln could also be involved, as Ford recently resumed Canadian sales of the China-built Lincoln Nautilus hybrid. The quota is expected to reset and increase to 52,185 vehicles for its second year, beginning March 1, 2027.
