BYD and Geely Eye a Nissan Plant in Mexico

According to the specialized publication Mexico Now, two of China’s largest automakers, BYD and Geely, are reportedly among the finalists to acquire a closed Nissan-Mercedes-Benz alliance plant in Mexico.

Mexico Now also mentions Vietnamese automaker VinFast as a third finalist. Joining this group of nine potential investors is another Chinese automaker, Great Wall.

For Mexican officials, the interest shown by these Chinese companies could help ease the country’s job shortage. However, they believe that increased production of Chinese vehicles in Latin America could irritate the United States — with Donald Trump leading the charge — and strain relations under the USMCA. It should be noted that Chinese vehicles are already being marketed in Mexico.
