Volta Energy Solutions Canada, a company specializing in battery materials for automotive applications, announced on December 15 that it had secured CAD $194 million in funding from the South Korean government to continue its development program, despite the challenges currently facing the battery industry. A subsidiary of South Korea–based Solus Advanced Materials, the company will use the funds to complete construction of its $750-million copper foil plant in Granby, located approximately 75 kilometres south of Montréal.
Copper foil is one of the key components in lithium-ion batteries, as it conducts electrical current and helps dissipate heat. Production at the facility is expected to begin in 2027, with an initial annual capacity of approximately 25,000 tonnes. Ultimately, the plant aims to reach an annual output of 63,000 tonnes—enough to supply batteries for nearly 2.5 million electric vehicles.
