Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli is preparing a multi-year investment plan of approximately US$1 billion to US$1.2 billion in the United States to increase its production capacity, particularly in support of its Cyber Tyre technology. The project still requires approval from the company's board of directors.
Pirelli had already announced in May that it planned to begin producing tires equipped with Cyber Tyre technology at its U.S. plant in Rome, Georgia. The technology allows the tire to transmit various types of information to the vehicle in real time, including data related to tire condition, maintenance and driving conditions.
The expansion plan is also intended to strengthen Pirelli's industrial and technological presence in the United States, a strategic market for the company. It also comes as Pirelli seeks to preserve its commercial and technological independence amid the influence of its Chinese shareholder Sinochem.
