FORD AND UNIFOR: AN HISTORICAL AGREEMENT
By Daniel Rufiange
While the strike is still raging south of the border between the three U.S. automakers and UAW (United Automobile Workers) workers, who have been without a contract since September 14, a historic agreement has been reached between Ford and the Canadian auto workers’ union, Unifor.
The agreement was reached on September 19, less than a day after the deadline set for midnight on September 18 was extended. A last-minute proposal from Ford broke the deadlock in the discussions. On the weekend of September 23–24, Ford’s Canadian employees ratified the offer in a vote that saw 54% of members accept the terms of the tentative agreement.
Unifor had chosen to negotiate with Ford first to establish a scale. Now that the agreement has been signed with the Dearborn firm, the organization is turning to GM for the second round of negotiations. Follow us for further developments.
