CATALYST THEFT SOARS
By Anne Bourgoin
According to data released by Allstate of Canada, claims involving catalytic converter thefts increased by more than 1,700% between 2018 and 2022.
Between 2021 and 2022, thefts increased by 60% and the average payment for their replacement amounted to $2,900. This represents an increase of 21% compared to 2021. And 81% higher by comparison with 2020.
The theft of this particular part of cars is widespread throughout the country. It contains rare or precious metals, such as palladium, rhodium and platinum, commonly used to treat exhaust gases. “Any gasoline-powered vehicle [. . .], regardless of make or manufacturer, can be targeted. And it’s not obvious that the catalytic converter is missing, unless you turn the key in the ignition and hear your car start to make a very loud noise. With the right tools, someone can steal a catalytic converter in just a few minutes,” explains Marc Tannous, Agency Manager at Allstate Canada.
