A NEW LOGO FOR ICE TIRES
By Éric Descarries
You may soon be able to see them on the flanks of Nokian Tyres’ new Hakkapeliitta 10 and R5 tires, but eventually you’ll be able to get confirmation that this winter tire has been created for a superior grip on ice. In addition to the mountain silhouette with a snowflake at its centre identifying it as a recognized winter tire, the certified “ice” tire will have a second symbol, consisting of a triangle with ice on its tip. This additional symbol indicates that the tire has been rigorously tested on icy surfaces in accordance with standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). To obtain this certification, the tire’s performance on ice will require an internationally recognized ice braking test carried out by a duly accredited independent laboratory. The tire’s performance rating must then be at least 18% higher than that of a standard reference product, before it can be awarded the new mark.
