THE RETURN OF COLOUR ACCORDING TO BASF
By Éric Descarries
In its most recent report, the German chemical group BASF notes a certain return of colours in the choice of automotive paints. Indeed, despite the basic colours such as white, black, silver and grey (so-called achromatic colours) still dominating the market, BASF noticed a resurgence of colours, as yellow, orange, green and purple are taking an important share of the market (even if white remains the first choice around the world contributing to a high resale value).
If BASF analysts look specifically at the North American market, buyers have fewer colour choices, but that doesn’t seem to stop them. Blue and red are still popular choices (despite a growing gap between the two as blue shows greater dominance), but more and more green, purple and beige vehicles are appearing. What is undeniable is that achromatic colours such as black, gray and silver are losing market share, especially in the larger vehicles. This has allowed earth tones like beige, brown and green to take over. Purple is making quite a breakthrough, demonstrating a change in consumer taste, which makes Liz Hoffman, BASF’s director of design in America, say, “Vehicle buyers are looking for vehicle colours that represent their positivity”.
